WHEREAS the Métis Nipissing Families is recognized in the Constitution Act 1982 as one of Canada’s Aboriginal people with a homeland in the Nipissing district; and WHEREAS to the Métis people, Louis Riel was a great humanitarian, elder and leader; and WHEREAS November 16th is recognized as Louis Riel Day by the Métis Nation who celebrate its national holiday at various locations across Canada; and WHEREAS the Metis Nipissing families will host commemorative ceremonies in the Municipality French River; and WHEREAS the Municipality of French River continues to take a leadership role in the fight for the elimination of all forms of discrimination and disadvantage. NOW THEREFORE Gisèle Pageau, Mayor of the Municipality of French River hereby proclaims November 16, 2020 to be Louis Riel Day in the Municipality of French River.
